Kaela's art teacher is out on maternity leave. When the new teacher started, she had everyone in the class paint a picture. I'm sure it was to give her an idea of where they all are artistically.

Kaela drew something GORGEOUS and quite full of colorful flowers but her full name is incorporated into the painting so I can only post a small part of it.

I wish I could share the rest, it is lovely.

Kaela's school mascot is the tiger so for the last big art project of the 9 weeks, her teacher assigned everyone in class a tiger to draw.

Kaela found a picture and put it on her desk but when she turned her back, it somehow ended up on another girl's desk......hmmm.
She wasn't happy but didn't want to make a stink so she chose another picture.

It was a more difficult pose of a tiger lying down with his head on his legs. The hardest part was getting the ruff around his head right because part of it is hidden under his leg.

Once done, she was very pleased with how it turned out. Her smile pretty much says it all.

Kaela had to do a book report for her English class. She chose to do a project using bookmarks.
Each bookmark represents something from the book "Dragon's Kiss." On the back of each bookmark is information about the story.

Kaela took the summer off from art but did another sketch...something to put in her binder for school...the tiger is her school mascot.

I hope she has a better time in gifted art this year. She hated it last year and almost dropped out.
Interesting enough, a teacher at the same school told me she let her own daughter drop out because she didn't enjoy it either....she plans on rejoining once she moves on to high school.....hmmmm.

Think I'll keep that in mind.

She is also in art 2 so I'm crossing my fingers that she will be happier.

Kaela carved an Easter basket stamp in her art class at school. She brought home this image she had made with it.

You can't see how intricate the eggs in the basket are...just so sweet!

I love it and can't wait to use it for Easter cards next year.......

Here is Curly Girl's first project of the summer. She choose this picture to enter into a contest...which we later found out she did not qualify for! At any rate, we think Bella is gorgeous......

She looks super fat but the horse in the calender WAS super fat (and the photographer took the photo from a weird angle.) That being said, Curly Girl was upset when we said the horse looked 'like a tick' and promptly got the calender to defend herself! HA!

Yesterday at work I had a VERY nice surprise....you KNOW how I love nice surprises!

I had been asked by the art teacher to come see her in class.
I went in and she handed me this year's financial report for the parish.

It was opened to a pretty picture.....that Curly Girl had drawn!

I was soooooo excited. A picture she had drawn had been selected to be shown in the report...which is a pretty big deal.
I thanked the teacher and told her I couldn't WAIT to see the original and have it framed.
Then said told me there was ANOTHER surprise! She had submitted the picture to an art exhibit being held in the Governor's mansion. The exhibit showcases art from all the schools in the state.

Guess what? (you know already...right?)

Curly Girl's was ACCEPTED!

She told me that you never know when (or if) you'll get the original back so that is why she gave me a copy of the report.

Now we wait to find out WHEN the exhibit is so we can all truck over there...and see it in person.

So...forgive the picture of the picture (taken at night)...but I'm so proud of her.

Curly Girl had to do a report on a major artist. She choose Dali from the list....not because he was her favorite...but because he hadn't been picked!

We searched some of his works and although most were of his surrelistic period, she found one she loved of these butterflies....

Here is her tray....she is very proud of it.

The main thing she learned in studying Dali is that he liked to surprise the eye by reversing shadows...which you can see in the image and the tray.....

Curly Girl did a self portrait Tuesday night. It took her about an hour.....with 30 minutes devoted to her hair! She was so proud of it. It brought tears to my eyes.

Curly Girl did some silk hankie painting in class the other day. This little fox turned out sooooooo cute. She actually 'drew' the fox with elmer's glue and then let it dry. Then she painted the fox and tree trunk in afterwards. Once everything was dried, I hand washed the hanky and removed the glue.

Here is a little 'gargoyle' box that Curly Girl made in art.
She is so proud of it. A girl in her regular classroom picked it up without asking and broke the lid first thing.

She was very sad at first but we fixed it with a little glue and it looks just fine.......

I thought the gargoyle looked like a little bear (and the wings ARE white) so we are using it as a "Give It To God" prayer box.....an appropriate use for something so precious.

This is Curly Girl's second attempt at painting. She picked this thinking it wouldn't be too difficult because it was mainly a head and leg.
It turned out to be a BEAR. The two tone face, the angle of the leg and all the shading on the sock

But, she DID IT! Her teacher pulled me aside and let me know this was a very hard painting to do.....all slightly within ear shot of Curly Girl....sort a made her day!

Curly Girl made some 'Meranimals' the other day.
I love to see some of the creatures she comes up! She has such a vivid imagination.
She was so proud of these she took them to show her after school art teacher.
Her teacher (Miss Margie) said 'these are the types of things judges like to see in competition because they are so original.'
You should have SEEN the smile on Curly Girl's face. It lit up the entire room and she was STILL smiling when I picked her up!
She hasn't entered any competitions yet, but maybe that compliment will give her the push she needed!

She named him Leo, after her own kitty at home, "Leonardo Da Kitty."

Tissue box condos.......

Curly Girl was at it again this weekend. She had me save up a bunch of tissue boxes for a few weeks, then she took them into her room to 'create' something for her little pets. I always know where to look when my tape goes missing!

She made this giant 'condo.'
It is soooooooo cute in person. You can't see all the details in these photos....like the little beds inside the boxes and the little stairs and windows, etc.
There are too many details to share....and she isn't even finished. The 3 boxes on the left are still 'under construction!'

Here is the 'back' of it.... You can see the little ramp and the little shutters from this angle.

I really like the little boat she made this time around. The little star shaped piece on the right side is the steering wheel....I didn't realize it was supposed to stand up until after I took the photo. Sorry Curly Girl!
She won't be happy that her pets fell down while I was moving it for its photo! Guess I'd better set them up in a hurry!

Curly Girl was doodling yesterday when I picked her up from school. As I drove up, I could see her slide something away. She likes to surprise me when she gets in the car.

She presented it to me with a flourish........but cracked me up because when I asked what it was she said 'I don't know....' Basically, it is a tortoise, unicorn and dragon fantasy creature.

She later dubbed it a "Tragon." So there you go!

Reversible sketchbook tutorial

In this post, I showed you a neat little sketchbook Curly Girl had made in her art class at school.
She was told to 'fill it up' with drawings over the summer break and then take it back to school and show the art teacher.

I had a few people that were interested in learning how to make them so I did this tutorial for them. It is best to read through this tutorial because it can be tricky. Folding the paper and pressing it down while wet, etc. If you can remember how you folded a 'fortune teller' from when you were in school, it helps because the diagonal fold is the part that makes this work.

You will need:
colored mat board or other thick board for the front and back of the sketchbook
white lighter weight mat board for the decorated part of the front and back (or heavy weight sketch paper)
several sheets of medium weight sketching paper (we used 7)
glue
ribbon
scissors
paper trimmer
double sided tape (optional)
ruler

To begin:
Cut 2 pieces of the heaviest weight mat board into the size you like. We did a 6 X 6 inch square.
These will be the front and the back of the sketchbook. Set aside.

Next cut 2 pieces of the white mat board into smaller squares to fit inside the cover pieces. We did 3.5 X 3.5 inch square. See how it fits inside the colored mat board.

Next tear out several pieces of the sketchbook paper. (we used 7)

You will need to cut all pieces to fit the book. Don't cut them until you fold them.
Fold them side to side first.

Then fold up one more time.

Then measure them to determine how much you need to cut from 2 ends. DO NOT CUT THE FOLDED EDGES.

Next open each page up and take one corner and fold it DIAGONALLY across to the other side.

All folds should be made the same way as they have to fold in on each other throughout the sketchbook.

Make sure you lay the paper down with the diagonal creases facing up and running in the same direction. (It doesn't matter which direction you choose. Ours ran right upper corner toward lower left corner.)
See how the crease itself faces UP. That is important because of the way the pages fold in on themselves.

Next, cut your ribbon about 30" long. Lay the ribbon pretty side DOWN on the wrong side of the colored mat board.
Glue the ribbon down. Let dry

Once dry, apply glue on TOP of the ribbon for your first sheet of sketchbook paper. Smooth the glue out to the edges with a piece of scrap paper first.

Next take your first piece of folded sketch paper and glue one of the flat corners (the one without the diagonal crease running through it.) down on top of the ribbon. Let dry.

In the next photo, see how I'm pinching the folds so the page will lay down properly. You take your right hand and press the open flap down and will make your 'next' page that way. (It is sort of like when you wrap a present and fold the ends in on themselves.)

One dried, the rest goes fast. You can use glue for the rest of the pages but I found that double stick tapes works well too.

Starting with the first page that has been glued down. Fold that page down. The corner that is facing up is the corner you attach the next sheet to. You will put tape on it. (or run a bead of glue) Pre fold the paper again and then press it down on TOP of the tape/glue.

In this next photo you can see how my thumb is on the 'bottom' sheet and the next 'top' sheet is
to the right.....Above my right thumb, you can see how the sheet folds in on itself like an accordian.

Continue doing this until you are done with all pages of the sketchbook.
Don't worry if the pages are not PERFECTLY aligned. You don't see it once the mat boards are in place.

Once done, take your other piece of colored mat board place it face down. Run a bead of glue and glue the LAST page of the sketchbook to it. I use a piece of scrap paper to smooth the glue out first.

Set something on top of it and let it dry.

Next, have someone( I asked Curly Girl) paint something lovely on the 2 pieces of white mat board. Once dried, glue them to the colored mat board. Then you can tie it up with the ribbon.

Since this is reversible, you want both sides to be pretty.

That's it! Now you are ready to start sketching.

Dreamy dolphin

Yesterday Curly Girl was in the craft room helping me with her sketchbook tutorial. I'll post that later. :-)

She pulled out her watercolors and painted different colors of blue on a leftover mat board. The water soaked right into the board and caused some of the paper to 'pill.' It made the picture look sort of fuzzy.

Then she made a line on the board, turned it around to show me....it was a dolphin. The lines melted into the blue a bit....which is what she wanted.

It is very simple compared to some of the things she has done but it is neat that she did it the way she did. The darkness you see at the bottom of the photo isn't due to lighting. That is the way she painted it.

A story about a bunny....

A little over a week ago, Curly Girl went with me to the pet store so I could exchange a couple fish for our aquarium. As we were walking up to the check out, she went to look at the cute little bunnies.
She yelled out for me to come look at the baby bunnies. Well, I had been to the same store an hour earlier (different story) and there were no BABY bunnies. So I walk over and sure enough there are 3 little teeny weeny, itsy bitsy, bald as a cucumber baby bunnies. They were freezing as the mom had just popped them out without a nest and hopped away.
So, Curly Girl DASHED to the front squealing with delight about the cute baby bunnies and the lady (who helped me before) said 'uh, we don't HAVE any baby bunnies..." Curly Girl and I replied "YES you do!" Actually, I said, 'you do NOW' and made a comment about bunny birth control.
Well all ---- broke out as they dashed around getting a separate cage for DADDY who apparently killed the last babies....just a few short weeks earlier. (I guess what THEY say about bunnies is true.)
After all the chaos, Curly Girl walked out very pleased with herself that she had 'saved' the babies from that MEAN daddy bunny.

'Blogworthy' Doodles.......

The last several weeks, we have had a lot of company...both from out of town and from local friends having sleepovers.
So I wasn't surprised the other day when Curly Girl announced she was needing some 'down time.' She sometimes just needs to play by herself, be alone and decompress.

When she was very young she would say, "No mommy, I play by self." It was her way of saying that she wanted to be A L O N E.

That being said, she spent 2-3 days without friends, just building with her legos, singing to herself, loving on the pets..especially Leo, cutting and doodling. She also did quite a bit of snuggling with me :-)

Here are 3 little doodles she did and then brought them to me for her blog. She always asks....'are these blogworthy?'

These 2 are more of her "Fire and Water" dragons.....even without color, you can already see more detailing in this pair than in the ones she did in March.

a little panda purse

This week for her sewing lesson, Curly girl chose to make a purse.

I took her to Hancock's to pick out fabric. She picked out some CUTE dog fabric and we went home. I helped her cut out the pattern and said, " okay, lets get you seated at the machine"
She said 'machine?" "uhhhhhhh, I don't want to do it with a machine....I like doing it by HAND."
So....back in the car and off to Hancock's one more time. This time I knew to take her to the fleece.

After seeing the movie "Kung Fu Panda," I'm not at all surprised by the print she chose.......and the little purse turned out really cute.

Here is a sketch Curly Girl did of a Hummingbird for IMT. She wanted to do it earlier in the week to get it submitted sooner.

I tried to convince her to color it in but she said "that would take away from the detail MOM...." How is THAT for a 10 year old's logic?

So we pulled out this amazing pup she did when she was 7.
The teacher had them draw one of those squiggly line things and then told them to turn it into something.

This is Curly Girl's first project for her Summer art class.
The teacher handed her a stuffed elephant so she could determine where she was 'artistically'..........she came up with a 'zoo' scene.
I especially like the little elephant trunk sneaking from behind to nab some peanuts out of the bowl. Oh and the people at the very top...kind of hard to see in the photo!

Curly girl was going through an art folder/holder she got for Christmas several years ago. She keeps sketches and pictures in it so she uses it regularly. For some reason, these 2 pictures were under a flap and she didn't see them.
She brought them to me a couple days ago.......such sweet memories.
She made the 'face' when she was 5 or 6 and the horse picture when she was 7.

Bamboo 'pens'

Curly Girl's last day in art was Monday. She is pretty bummed about it because she was really enjoying the class.
I have her enrolled in art this Summer though.....and she wants me to teach her how to make mosaics and crochet and sew.........she is getting ambitious!

She made these neat Bamboo pens and then got to draw with them. She said it was kind of difficult using the pen at first. She asked me to buy her some ink so she can practice over the Summer..........

Here are a few pieces of pottery Curly Girl made in her art class a few weeks ago.
She got them back Friday after they had been fired. True to form, she made something for 'everyone...'
She kept the little snake bowl, she gave the star to her brother and the square to her dad.
I got the little open pendant.....its now on a little silk cord, ready to wear.......

Curly Girl made this in art class this week. It is a little sketch book with a couple of her water colors attached. There is no front or back or right side up of the little book....pretty cute.
It opens up accordian style...sort of.
She can keep it handy and fill it up with sketches this Summer.

I couldn't help but think how this could work for someone redoing their house or a room.
I've always taped or stapled everything to a file folder but with this you could attach the little paint and fabric swatches between the pages....maybe make a couple of them envelope style..........

Also...what a great gift idea..........

Every other week in her class, Curly Girl's classroom teacher has 'art.'
She usually only gives one or two directions. She mainly tries to keep the uninterested kids quiet and settled while the ones who love art 'create.'
The directions for this particular Friday were simple. Draw a fantasy creature.

Curly Girl was on a roll recently so I have a few sketches to put up this week.

This one is of Leonardo Da Kitty. Her sweet kitty...she even drew the little bell we have on his collar so we can hear him. He tends to sleep in 'things' all over the house. He likes boxes, baskets, terracotta bowls and now his tunnel. What a happy kitty.

Curly girl brought me this picture yesterday...asking if it was 'blog worthy.'
Cracks me up....she has little 'isms' just like the rest of the family.
At first glance, I thought to myself ...hmm...she has drawn better horses. Luckily I didn't say anything as she quickly announced "its a Llama."
Oh....if I'd taken then time to READ the top of the paper, I would have seen the word LLAMA at the top of the page.
Its a great Llama.....

A chalk Mermaid

Curly girl LOVES drawing with chalk. It is so easy to blend. As soon as the weather gets nice, we get her a giant box of colored chalk.
The sun was super bright and sort of washed out the photo but you get the idea!
She did a horse and eagle too but they didn't come out dark enough to post.

Here is curly girl's art for this week's theme of "medical art" at Inspire Me Thursday.

She had a broken arm as a toddler and a couple years ago broke her jaw in 2 places while riding her scooter. I encouraged her to do something with that but she couldn't....she said it made her jaw hurt again to think about it.

We played with the theme a bit and then I left her to 'create.' I think she was quite imaginative...depicting how band aids and bandages help make things feel better.
I especially like how the gauze is used as a door on the little house.

Leo and Cleo....

Our curly girl was home sick today.....with a nasty cold. While driving to the doctor, she worked on a couple cat sketches.

On the way home, I got her an oreo blast from Sonic and the guy who delivered it looked through the window and asked to see her sketch.
I rolled down the window and he told her how good a job she had done ...which made her day.
He then went on to say practicing while in the car is good for her reflexes....he was an art student/aspiring architect who was working shifts at Sonic while going to school.
The top sketch is of Leo....our kitty.....
this one is of Cleo....her friend's kitty.

It is interesting that she can remember variances in their features. She hasn't seen Cleo since last June because we moved. But she was very slightly fluffy with rounded, soft ears.
Leo is a siamese mix and has that distinctly flatter face with sharper ears and a slick coat....which she captured in her sketch.

Amos the mouse....

This is a picture our curly girl drew for a class assignment from the book "Ben and Me." The book is written from a mouse's perspective about Benjamin Franklin.
This particular drawing is where Amos is shocked during the lightning and kite experiments Ben did.
I really love the detail she did with this one. She was really proud of how well the mouth turned out.....so realistic!

For some reason, curly girl has been drawing giraffes lately. This is her practice for class.
She goes through phases of drawing all day/weekend long.....to where she doesn't draw much at all. Right now, she isn't drawing that much....hope it isn't due to a lack of interest....that would be sad.

Friday was regular (in the classroom) art day. It is every other Friday and the classroom teacher has the kids do something 'artsy...'

This Friday, the teacher gave one instruction to the kids regarding their pictures.
She asked them to draw 'opposites...'

As part of her gifted class, she is asked to practice drawing things a few minutes 3 times a week.
These are 2 of her pictures she did this week.
The giraffe held the attention of the entire pediatrician's office today while she was drawng it.

It only takes her a few minutes to 'whip' a picture up.

Tissue box 'pet town'

I told you my daughter likes art....but I forgot to mention that she wants to be an architect.

About every 6 weeks, she will ask us to start collecting tissue boxes.
Then, she will go into her room and design a 'town' of some sort. She has done many of these....from bedrooms to malls. Most have sleeping quarters, kitchens, playrooms....the lot.
This one is a modest 'pet town' for her growing stash of pet shop critters. (Although she has the giant sets that come with the critters, she wanted something special for them. )

This one has a daycare, several ladders that go to the next level, a trapdoor in case of a fire or other emergency, a sun deck, a play room and just some 'rooms to hang out in.'

It will last about a week or so and then she'll come home from school and ditch it.

Then we wait until next time.......

This 'used' to be Grommit, from Wallace and Grommit.
He is made of non-hardening play-dough and is 4 years old.
After 2 moves, he isn't in such good shape......but we still love him.
He gets restretched every now and again... so he doesn' t really look like he did when he was first created!

I've been saving my daughter's artwork for years. She has always shown an affinity for it. This year she has been accepted into the gifted art program in school. We thought it would be fun to post some art to see her progression as she matures. Then she can take it over one day.
She did the little giraffe when she was 3 and the ocean when she was 5
She made the horse face mug last year when we lived in Oklahoma.
The two masks were done this month for her art class............she is wearing one of them for her avatar photo!
